Third and Forth Graders Receive a Tour of
the Library
Every year, the staff
of the Children’s Department invites local third and fourth graders and their
teachers for a special tour of the library to learn about the many exciting
books, materials and programs available to them. The purpose of the visits is to
encourage children to discover the joy of reading. “We feel that it is important
to start early to encourage a lifetime of reading for pleasure,” says Children’s
Librarian Anita Ditz. “We also want children to realize that the library skills
learned at school libraries are transferable to all libraries.” Each
school visit lasts approximately 75 minutes and library staff provides the
students with a general library orientation and tour, the opportunity to obtain
library cards and booktalks.
