I woke up this morning to sound of pouring rain - a perfect day to stay inside and read. I am in luck because I have several books to read this weekend! My only problem is prioritizing which one to read first. I have the new Elizabeth Peters book, The Laughter of Dead Kings, which is a new Vicky Bliss mystery that takes place in Egypt. Peters also writes a more well-known series about Amelia Peabody, which also often takes place in Egypt, so it is interesting to see what her different take will be in this series.

I have not blogged for a week or so, because I have had too much to read and I had to make a choice, By now, you probably know what I would choose. One nice thing about having a library due date is that I could tell my husband (over the weekend) that all these books were due and I had to read them by Monday. We have been married for 35 years so he knows when it is a lost cause.

Have you ever tracked a book into the wild? Centre County Reads has released some of our past titles, including A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson and When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka, around the county and we want to know if you see them, pick them up or read them. They have a label on the front with an ID number and our website, www.centrecountyreads.org. Just go there, type in the number and tell us where you found the book. It is anonymous!

How do you get ready for a long holiday weekend? I get picnic food and plan family gatherings, but, of course, I gather a lot of books to read! Last Friday, I checked out 5 books from Schlow Library, but, in case that wasn't enough, I bought a copy of Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory. I wanted to read it if I was going to continue to recommend it. I really did enjoy it! My main criterion is that I care about the characters and I really did bond with with Del immediately.

People write a lot of books about dogs. I love to read dog mysteries. Susan Conant has written 18 mysteries with her beautiful malumutes, Rowdy and Kimi. Laurien Berenson features standard poodles. One of my favorites is Virginia Lanier who wrote 5 books featuring bloodhounds. Even though these are just standard mysteries, I usually learn a lot about that specific breed.

This title is not in referenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. to my daughter's wedding (which was last week and was perfect). This is the title of Daryl Gregory's new science fiction book. Daryl is the webmaster for Centre County Reads, so we are all excited about the publication of his first book. It has received great reviews in Publisher's Weekly (starrred), Library Journal and Kirkus (review journals that librarians use). It is an alternate history where humans are randomly possessed by demons and one unhappy soul decides to fight back. It will be released on Tuesday, August 26th.
