I am in Pittsburgh and we are preparing for the wedding. This does not stop me from reading and thinking about reading. First, I brought a new book, Insider's Guide to Pittsburgh . This really helped us when we (my daughter and I) were driving on wedding errands and decided to stop at the zoo. We wanted to check first to see if the zoo was open until 5 or 6 PM. Interestingly, the book actually said it was open from 9 AM until 6 AM!!!!! We correctly interpreted this to be a misprint and had a wonderful time watching the two new baby elephants until 6 PM.

One thing I really enjoy about being a librarian is the chance to find out what others are reading and even get to talk to them about it. For those of you who are not lucky enough to be a librarian (or even work in a library), there are book clubs to provide that same sharing experience. At Schlow Library, we have recently added book discussion group kits with at least 6 copies of the same book and a loan period of 6 weeks.

I drove to Pittsburgh this weekend for my daughter's bridal shower. Of course, we spent time with the wedding plans since the wedding is in less than three weeks. My daughter is also a librarian so we both realize that this is within the next date due period. The books we checked out on Saturday would be due on her wedding day.

If you read the Book Beat review by Kevin Hagopian on Sunday in the Centre Daily Times, you learned about Walter Mirisch, who was very instrumental in getting the film industry started. The book sounds interesting, but I was also motivated to watch some of the movies. All of the libraries in Centre County have videos and DVDs. Some of them are free, some have a nominal fee. So, check out some of these movies to learn more about the earlier days of film: Some Like it Hot, West Side Story, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Pink Panther, and Fiddler on the Roof.

Joseph Bruchac, the author of the Breakfast Serial - "Janko and the Giant", published each Saturday in the Centre Daily Times, has also written many other books for teens and children. One of the most intriguing teen books, is "Code Talk: a Novel about the Navaho Marines of World War II." As many people know, the Native Americans were told to forget the "old ways" and that included their languages, but during WWII, the military used them and their language to relay top secret messages. This is a novel about at true event.

Since it is Arts Festival week in State College, I thought I would write about books, both fiction and nonfiction, about art that have been very popular reads.

JA Babay from the Centre Hall Library is reading "Janko and the Giant", the Breakfast Serial printed each Saturday in the CDT, at the Millheim Pool, starting today at 1 PM. This is one way to get kids to take a break out of the sun and sit down to rest a little during the hottest times of the day or during a thunderstorm break.
