  • Novelist Carolyn Turgeon will read from her own work, discuss her upcoming workshop for writers, and discuss low-residency MFA programs. Turgeon is the author of three novels based on classic fairy tales. Her next book, The Fairest of them All, is scheduled for publication in 2013 by Simon & Schuster. She is a graduate of Penn State and earned a master's degree in literature from UCLA. In addition to writing, she teaches for the low-residency MFA program at the University of Alaska at Anchorage.

  • On September 18 at 6:30 p.m., the Evening Book Group will discuss Riding the Bus with My Sister, Simon's yearlong account of riding public buses with her sister Beth, who has an intellectual disability. This meeting will be held in the Musser Room instead of the usual location. In September, the book groups will be discussing works by author Rachel Simon in coordination with Penn State's Office of Disability Services for Disability Awareness Month

  • Susan Russell, long-time actress, playwright, and assistant professor of theatre at Penn State will speak about her work. Susan is the founder of Cultural Conversations, a new visual, theatre, and dance festival devoted to promoting and fostering new works that circle themes of global and local diversity. She also started the Body Language project, a program that encourages adolescent girls to write monologues on body-image issues, which they performed as part of Cultural Conversations' theater event last year.

  • John Carr will discuss his career, which has spanned more than three decades and continues to prove fruitful, with two books coming out in 2010 and three scheduled for 2011. His earlier books include Ophidian Conspiracy (1975) and Kalvin Kingmaker, (2001), as well as others written with Roland J. Green and Don Hawthorne.
