    TUESDAY, MARCH 12TH IS THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR THE CONTEST!

    Would you like to be a published author? Submit a book you've written to our 29th Annual Write & Illustrate Your Own Book Contest!

    We invite Centre County children in grades 1 through 6 to share their creativity with others in the community!     You may submit your entry anytime between MONDAY, JANUARY 7 and TUESDAY, MARCH 12, 2013.

     

    Winners will be selected in four categories: Grades 1 & 2, Grades 3 & 4, Grades 5 & 6 and Past Winners. Everyone will receive a certificate of participation. The winning books will be bound and will become a permanent part of the Schlow Children's Department Collection. We will honor the winners at a special ceremony on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 4 PM in Schlow's Community Room.

    There are also Tips for Novel Writing in the attachments to the left.

    Are you interested in writing your own book? Looking for tips on how to do well in our 29th Annual Write & Illustrate Your Own Book Contest?

    Then come to our Tips for Young Writers Workshop on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2ND: 10 AM - 11 AM.

    Find out what contest judges are looking for, and you may be one of the newest authors at Schlow Library! Anne Burgevin, an experienced teacher who has conducted writing classes, will show you ways to improve your writing skills, and discuss simple mistakes to avoid. 

    If you've already started your book, bring it for a brief personal evaluation beginning at 11 AM!

  • Writers and poets are invited to share what they've been doing lately at the Nittany Valley Writers Network new works show on Tuesday, December 11 at 7 p.m. in Schlow Library's community room.

    Plan to read one scene that doesn't need a whole lot of explanation that can be read in no more than five minutes. Sign up will begin at 6:30.

    People who just want to listen are completely welcome. We love having an audience.

  • Read the winning entries! As part of the 2012 Centre County Reads community read of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, the Center for American Literary Studies at Penn State sponsored a Grim Reaper Writing Contest. Because The Book Thief is narrated by Death, the contest asked for submissions to be written from the point of view of Death. Thank you to everyone who entered!

  • On April 28, The Nittany Valley Writers Network will host a writer's workshop featuring C. Hope Clark.

    Hope Clark is the editor of the Funds for Writers newsletters and the Funds for Writers website, one of the Writer's Digest "101 Best Websites for Writers" from 2001 to 2011. She is a full-time freelance writer and the author of The Shy Writer: An Introvert's Guide to Writing Success.
