Scenes from Schlow on a Summer Day

I just took a walk through the library and was so pleased to see so many different people using this great place. Our children's department is "buzzing" with kids who have caught the reading bug by being a part of our summer reading program for children. There are bugs EVERYWHERE in the children's department - some are bookworms, some are paper, and there are even some REAL LIVE bugs for you to come and look at. We have 2 butterfly habitats set up - a monarch habitat and painted lady habitat. Some of the painted ladies have already transformed and are flying about. The monarchs (as of today, July 3rd) have created 2 chrysalides and there's at least one more that looks to be just about ready to start spinning. You don't have to be a child or have a child with you to come in and take a look. Stop by before they're released!
The circulation desk is running at a constant speed right now. It seems as though there are rarely moments when there isn't someone there, checking out a book, asking a question, or chatting with our friendly circ staff. Come in and say "hi" - they'll love it!
Our gallery has been transformed once again as the Art Alliance's Instructor Exhibit has been set up and is ready to go. There are some really amazing pieces there. While you're visiting the Arts Fest, why not drop in - it's cool, it's dry, and it's FREE!
Upstairs we've got young adults reading and trying to find that "perfect" summer book. There are a couple of authors that are particularly popular this summer - Stephanie Meyer & Scott Westerfeld are a couple that pop into my head. Of course there are also a few teens here looking for the books on their summer reading lists. It's already happened in my house where one of the books we picked up (begrudgingly by my son) became an unexpected favorite.
We've got a summer reading program for young adults with gaming, anime, fashion and much more. It's not too late to sign up to join in the fun.
The adult department is also crowded - I think many people are enjoying our A/C - that's cool, it's what it's there for! We have a really good selection of magazines as well as some free local publications that you can take with you. We've also got free Wi-Fi in the library building so you can enjoy the A/C, a view over Allen Street, and a relaxing environment. With our many windows on the second floor, you should have no problem finding a comfy place to rest on a hot summer day!read more
