Fines are Fine!
OK, so I asked those of you who don't use the library why that is. Thank you to my sole responder. This blog's for you!
First of all, I know there are people out there who are ashamed of their fines - don't be! In fact, let me be the first to say THANK YOU!!!! Well, I guess I should also say thank ME, since I'm a habitual late returner. Those of us who pay our fines are making MAJOR contributions to the library's operation. Before I became a resident of Library-Land, I always thought that there had to be a HUGE black mark next to my name whenever my card was scanned. Au contraire, mon frere! Fines are appreciated, revered, valued. In fact, I'm surprised confetti and balloons don't appear every time I cross the threshold (but I digress...).
I have heard librarians say they'd like to change the name of fines to "extended usage fees" to give it a more positive connotation. I think that's nice. It has a good ring to it, don't you agree? The first 21 days are free, then 25 cents per day thereafter to cover extended usage. Nice. read more
