Tremendous Tuesdays: Multicultural Paper Flowers

Swing by Schlow for craft fun! Every Tuesday from 11 AM-2 PM during the One World, Many Stories @ Schlow Summer Reading program we will be making crafts in the Children's Department. No registration necessary.

June 14: CHINESE DRAGONS

Chinese around the world, proudly proclaim themselves "Lung Tik Chuan Ren" (Descendents of the Dragon). Dragons are referred to as the divine mythical creature that brings with it ultimate abundance, prosperity and good fortune. Create your own lucky dragon for your house!

 

June 21: PAPER WEAVING

Try this paper weaving craft to create beautiful, colorful wall-hangings or decorations. Choose from amongst many colorful patterns and add a bit of patience, and soon you'll weave a craft worthy of a frame.

 

June 28: MULTICULTURAL PAPER FLOWERS

Throughout history paper flowers served as decorative features to create a festive atmosphere to gatherings and to bring life to homes and parties when real flowers were not available. Discover the many traditions in which paper flowers were used and create your own personal flower to take home.

 

July 5: AFRICAN MASKS

In Africa masks can be traced back to well past Paleolithic times. These art objects were, and are still made of various materials, included are leather, metal, fabric and various types of wood. During celebrations, initiations, crop harvesting, war preparation, peace and trouble times, African masks are worn by a chosen or initiated dancer. What will your mask represent?

 

July 12: BLOSSOMING CHERRY BRANCHES

Art history dictates that cherries symbolize something new and pure, as well as being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life.  Create your own blossoming cheery tree at schlow to celebrate the wonder of life past and present.

 

July 19: JAPANESE FANS

Japanese fans are made of paper on a bamboo frame, usually with a design painted on them. In addition to folding fans (ōgi), the non-bending fans (uchiwa) are popular and commonplace. The fan is primarily used for fanning oneself in hot weather. The fan symbolizes friendship, respect and good wishes. They are given on special occasions, and they are also an important stage prop in Japanese dance. Create your own fan to beat the summer heat or to give as a gift to someone special.

 

July 25: FOLK COSTUMES

Folk costumes express an identity through clothing which usually relates to a geographic area or a period of time in history, but can also indicate social, marital and/or religious status. Such costumes often come in two forms: one for everyday occasions, the other for festivals and formal wear. Design a costume that expresses YOUR identity!
