You've Gotta Have Friends!

National Friends of Libraries week begins this weekend. While I know you aren't going to be seeing sales on appliances to commemorate this, I think it's an appropriate time to share with you all what the Friends of Schlow Library mean to those of us who work in and use Schlow. The Friends of Schlow Library are the people who make Schlow more than just a building with books inside. They help with plant maintenance, purchases of new furniture, artwork, they've even provided fresh water coolers for the staff. They were integral in the purchase of gaming equipment for the Young Adult Department and when the going gets tough for the library, the first thing we hear from the Friends is "What can we do? How do we help?" They've tirelessly written letters to legislators in support of library funding and services, they dedicate much of their time VOLUNTEERING to promote the library. Without the Friends, Schlow wouldn't have such a spectacular line up for First Thursdays - they help pay for performances and author visits. And now the Friends are working with Harrison's Restaurant to do even more. Harrison's has agreed to donate 20% of customer purchases (before tax & gratuity) to the Friends of Schlow Library from October 17th through the 31st. There will be brochures and coupons available at the library and other area venues, but if you don't have one, just mention to your server that you'd like to support Schlow and your wish is their command!  This is a very generous offer on the part of Harrison's and we are so grateful. So, if you're a regular diner at Harrison's, why not mention the library? If you've never eaten there, first of all, you're missing out on some really great food, secondly, drop by, give it a try and don't forget to mention Schlow!  The budget debacle is "over" but we're all still shaking from aftershocks. The Friends of Schlow Library and Harrison's are helping to ease some of that shock. Thank you so much!
