We are getting a lot of questions about downloading library ebooks, so here are two great tutorials that might help you. One is for the nook, which is similar to most ereaders and one is for the iPad, which is similar to all the iDevices and comparable to Android devices. Overdrive book app add early return feature

OverDrive eBookeBook, or electronic book, is a book that you "read" on your computer screen. Schlow highlights one book a month from our collection of eBooks available at NetLibrary which can be found by logging into your account. There are many different books available for your perusal. App Adds Return-Early Feature

Do you read Library eBooks using the Overdrive app? You can now "return" your ebooks early, before they expire. This is good news if you've hit your limit of 4 titles, and also good news for your fellow ebook readers. Returning an ebook instantly frees it up for the next userA library cardholder and/or user of library services. (sorry, this does not currently apply to any eAudiobooks).

Readers who use eReaders like the Nook or Sony eReader - which don't work with the OverDrive app - have always been able to return EPUBS early using Adobe Digital Editions.

How to get the Return-Early Feature:
Download the latest version of the Overdrive Media Console (v2.3). You should be prompted to update from your device, but you can also visit your device's App store to download the latest version.

And with the latest version of the app, you can return and delete a book in just one step:

Select the title and choose the Delete option.
Choose "Return and Delete" to remove the title from your OverDrive eAccount (from the iPhone/iPod/iPad: Tap Edit, then Delete)
Don't chose "Delete without Returning" unless a title has already expired - this will remove a file from your device, but it will still be checked out to you for up to 14 days.

Haven't tried the free OverDrive Media Console App yet? Load it on your iPhone, iPad, Android device (and some Blackberrys), and you'll be able to borrow and read Library eBooks for free!

Kindle ebooks now available!

nook v. Kindle

If you didn't get an eReader for Christmas, you may still be deciding which one to buy. This is a link to the Gizmodo review on the nookColor and Kindle Fire before they were released in November. Each person needs to decide how they are going to use it to make the best decision. Do you need color for magazines and children's books? Do you want a mobile device to surf the web? Do you want a simpler, lighter device to just read novels? Do you like to read the back-lit screens in the dark or do you prefer the e-ink screens? The nookTouch and KindleTouch both have e-ink, are lighter and less expensive.

One major difference for library users is the downloading for library ebooks. The Kindle ebooks (yes, the library books are now compatible with the Kindles) use your Amazon account and can be downloaded wirelessly. For all nooks (including the Color), you must download first to a computer and then transfer through the USB cable.

Effective immediately - Penguin (publisher) Kindle books require USB transfer

Penguin Publishing has mandated that all library Kindle books from its company must be transferred via USB. If you go to check out a Penguin book, each page will tell you that you will be required to use a USB cable rather than a wireless transfer. At the Amazon site, you will again be guided to transfer via USB.

This would certainly not be our choice but, for right now, there is nothing we can do about it. Please contact Penguin if you wish to express your opinion about this change. But please let us know what you are experiencing so we can continue to help you and be advocates for you.

Overdrive app now available for nooks!

Now users of NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet and NOOK Color can borrow eBooks and audiobooks wirelessly using the OverDrive app. Just go to your app store and search for Overdrive and download & open the app. Click on the function key (depending on which nook you have) and choose Get Books. You can search for Schlow Library by zip code and the app will send you to the digital ebooks and audibooks. Find a book or an audiobook and check it out with your library card and download it. The first time, you will have to set up an Adobe Digital ID. This is very simple - just follow the cues in the app (when you try to download the first time). The ID will be your email address and a password that you choose. If you need help, stop by the Gadget Bar at the ReferenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. Desk and we can show you how it works on our Nook Color or help you get started on yours!! This makes your ebook transfer so much easier - try it today.

Overdrive apps for Kindle Fires too!

You can read Kindle versions of our ebooks on your Fire but if you want to listen to our MP3 audiobooks, you need the Overdrive app. It is not available in the Kindle store and must be downloaded here. Your security settings must be set to allow outside apps. Let us know if you need any assistance.
