Celebrate National Library Week with Schlow

National Library Week, April 10-16, celebrates the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians. Libraries across the country serve as places of opportunity, providing multi-media collections and programs that teach literacy, promote continuing education, and encourage lifelong learning. Join in the fun and learn more about Schlow's services as we feature an online scavenger hunt on our website, as well as a paper scavenger hunt in the Adult Department. Prizes will be awarded every day and there will be a drawing for a Nook eReader at the end of the week for all entrants.

Look for the online clues on our website each day during National Library Week and email refdesk@schlowlibrary.org with your answer. You may also pick up a Scavenger Hunt paper form any day, April 10-16, from the Adult Department ReferenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. Desk.

Did you know that...

2 out of 3 Americans own library cards - and use them?

There were 1.4 billion library visits last year, compared to movie attendance of 1.3 billion and sporting event attendance of 218 million? Americans spend about two-and-a-half times as much on salty snacks as they do on public libraries?

Schlow alone checked out 724,390 books and other materials in 2010, and received 341,004 patronA library cardholder and/or user of library services. visits?

96% of Americans agree that libraries play an important role in giving everyone a chance to succeed?

Creative Works by clay artist Linna Muschlitz

The Gallery is pleased to present the works of clay artist, Linna Muschlitz from May 1st to May 31st. An opening is scheduled in the Library's Downsborough Room, Sunday, May 6th from 2 to 4 PM. Stop in a talk with the artist about her inspiration and her techniques.

Muschlitiz spent her childhood in the woods among majestic oak, maple,
larch and hemlock trees, yet only two miles from Penn State. From ages 5
to 15 she attended Penn State's Saturday Morning Art Classes for
Children established by Viktor Lowenfeld, where she relished exposure to
varied artistic mediums and instruction from world-class artists.

In 4th grade she had her first pottery class, and decided to be a potter when she grew up. After graduating from Penn State with a BA Visual Arts-Ceramics, she earned an MS in Art Education from the University of Oregon, taking pottery classes and workshops in a variety of settings along the way.

Travel to exotic and colorful places like Guatemala, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Mexico, Hawaii, and our own National Parks have been sources of inspiration for both her clay work and her richly colored silk paintings.

Muschlitz's works have been featured in juried shows in Hawaii, Oregon, and
Pennsylvania, and have won awards in all three states.
