What's My Pin? Do I Need a New Card?

Having trouble checking on your account? Don't panic! You just need to come in and get a new library card and PIN number. If you don't know your PIN number, just call us and we'll be happy to help you!

We are turning a page on the history of libraries in Centre County by joining our catalog with that of the Centre County Library. Each library will remain its own entity, but we are now sharing resources across the county.

Every library card holder in Centre County will need to exchange their old card for a new federation card. This can be done very easily at the circulation desk as you enter the library.

What does this mean for you?

You can place holds on items from public libraries in Bellefonte, Centre Hall, Aaronsburg, Philipsburg, and, of course State College. In the past these items would need to be placed on Interlibrary Loan, which can take some time to process.
Items from the above locations will be delivered to the library you specify.
You can pay your fines at any public library location.
You can return your items to any public library in the county.
Our catalog is now expanded to include all items available here and at the Centre County Library locations.

Computers at Schlow

There are many access points for computing at Schlow. Near the reference desk, there are 18 computers, 2 express stations. and 3 Microsoft computers. We also have Wi-Fi throughout the building. Some of the desks in the Read Room are wired to connect to the internet without a wifi card.

General Usage

You need a Schlow Library card and PIN# to use the computers. Guest access is also available with a valid ID.
There is a limit of 2 hours per day. The computers will log off after one hour (remember to save your work to an external disc). If no one is waiting, you can log on for another hour.
The Express stations are available for 20 minutes.
Most of the computers (except for the two Microsoft stations) have Open Office (which is compatible with Microsoft Office) and Firefox.
Printing: Prints should be picked up at the reference desk. Black & white prints are 10 cents per page; color prints are 50 cents per page. Please ask for assistance if you have questions about the printing.
If all the computers are in use, ask about reserving a computer.
All computers will shut down 15 minutes before the library closes.

Internet Policy

Library Rules

Any library cardholder in good standing may access the Internet from the Libraries.
Parents or guardians are responsible for the information and materials accessed by minors under the age of 18 at this computer.
Adult Internet users are responsible for the information they choose to view.
The Libraries have installed filtering software on the library computers to comply with the federal Children's Internet Protection Act, which requires libraries to deactivate the filtering software if a library patron or parent/guardian requests it. This Internet policy remains in effect whether the filtering software is active or not.

Acceptable Use

Please be polite, considerate to other patrons, and use appropriate language while using the Internet. Users shall comply with all applicable Internet protocols.
Remember that the library computers are a part of total library service. You are expected to behave according to approved library rules of conduct.

Unacceptable Use

Viewing, transmitting or downloading pornographic materials: "Displaying or causing to display any explicit sexual material (as defined in 18 PA C.S. 5903)...on any...viewing screen in such manner that the display is visible...in any establishment where minors, as part of the general public, may be exposed to view all or any part of such materials". (Penna. Criminal Code-Sect.5903.) This is a felony offense.
Uses that violate the law or encourage others to violate the law: transmitting offensive or harassing messages; offering for sale or use any illegal substance; downloading or transmitting confidential, trade secret information, or copyrighted materials. Even if materials are not marked with the copyright symbol, users should assume that all materials are protected unless there is explicit permission on the materials to use them.
Uses that cause harm to others or damage to their property: engaging in defamation (harming another's reputation by lies); impersonating another user; vandalism, including any attempt to harm or destroy data, software or hardware.
Uses that compromise the safety and security of minors when using e-mail, chat rooms and other forms of direct electronic communications. For minors under the age of 18: giving others private information about one's self or others, including credit card numbers and social security numbers or arranging a face-to-face meeting with someone one has "met" on the computer network or Internet without a parent's permission; disclosing user names and passwords.
Uses that jeopardize the security of the computer network: unauthorized use of personal software programs on the library's computers; altering the library's computer settings or hardware, or damages Library property.

Usage Agreement

As with more traditional resources, the Libraries do not act in place of a parent and will not be responsible for enforcing parental restrictions on minors that are beyond the scope of this policy.
A person’s use of this network leaves electronic information in the public domain. Internet communications are not private, nor are they confidential.
The Libraries will not be held responsible for:
Any charges incurred by users of the Internet.
The content or accuracy of information found on the Internet. Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at your own risk.
Any confidential or financial information patrons may send over the network
Unauthorized security breaches. By connecting to the network, users acknowledge all associated risks.
Physical damage to personal devices plugged in to Library infrastructure (power, network, etc.).
The Libraries reserveWhen the item you want is checked out to someone else you may request that it be held for you when it is returned. Requests can be made for any item in our catalog including new releases and items on order. You will receive notification via e-mail (or telephone) when your hold is available for pick up. Your request will be honored in the order it is received. the right to implement and enforce usage procedures as necessary including posting of rules and regulations, and to withdraw access privileges or impose other appropriate sanctions for those who do not comply with the protocols, rules, regulations or service provider agreement.

When using a personal device to connect to the Library network

Printing is not supported via this network. If you need to print a document or webpage you must be put it on a Floppy or CD-Rom and print it from one of the Library public computers.
No staff support will be given to configure your personal device to use our network.

The Libraries encourage all users to adhere to good computer and network security practices, including but not limited to:

using a personal firewall and regularly updated antivirus software.

applying all security related patches to personal software.

If you are having trouble using your eReader or tablet to access our eBooks and other digital resources we are here to help. Do you need a demonstration or face-to-face help, but can't make it to our Gadgets for Grownup classes? Did you come to a class and struggle in a classroom environment? If so, you are welcome to ask questions at the referenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. desk anytime. However, if you find yourself needing more than a quick answer, you may want to make an appointment with someone who can sit down and show you how to make your device work with our services.
