Fowler, Allan. Antarctica (Rookie Read-About Geography). Children's Press, 2001. This is a great book for emergent readers about the coldest continent.

Petersen, David. Antarctica (True Book). Children's Press, 1999. Photos and simple text introduce the coldest continent.

Portis, Antoinette. A Penguin Story. Harper Collins, 2009. Edna the penguin only knows the three colors that surround her: white ice, black night, and blue sea. She is convinced there is something more out there. So she sets out on a quest-a quest for color.

Markovics, Joyce. Weddell Seal. Bearport, 2009. Antarctica is the coldest place in the world - very few animals can live in a climate where temperatures can drop as low as -128 degrees Farenheit. Follow biologist Terrie Williams as she studies how the amazing Weddell seal survives these extreme conditions.

Rockwell, Anne. Why are the Ice Caps Melting? The Dangers of Global Warming. (Let's- Read -and -Find- Out -Science). HarperCollins, 2006. Explains what may happen as the ice caps begin to melt.

Bauer, Marian Dane. A Mama for Owen. Simon & Schuster, 2007. The young African hippopotamus who is adopted by a land tortoise clearly shows that caring is what defines "family."

Jeffers, Oliver. Lost and Found. Philomel Books, 2006. Once there was a little boy who found a penguin at his door.
Weeks, Sarah. Without You. Harper Collins, 2005. Illustrated song about a baby emperor penguin who waits with his father while his mother hunts for food.

Wood, Audrey. Little Penguin's Tale. Voyager Books, 1993. This is an extravagant cautionary tale that stresses the dangers of wandering off by yourself. Move with Little Penguin as he slides down hills, dances with silly goony birds and almost gets eaten by a whale!

Young Adult Twenty 10 Winter Blast Reading Challenge

It's winter in Happy Valley! The perfect time for a Young Adult Winter Blast Reading Challenge! On those days of freezing temperatures, no school, or after sledding...curl up inside with some hot cocoa and a book!

It's simple! If you are in grades 6 through 12, all you have to do is read at least 20 books! Turn in the completed form to the ReferenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. Desk before March 19th, 2010 and choose a book as a prize!
