A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf.

In the book, Woolf discusses why it is that men, and not women, have always had power, wealth, and fame.

She suggests two keys to freedom: fixed income and ones own room.

The Bloomsbury Artists in American Collections

July 6–September 26, 2010

The Bloomsbury group, of which Virginia Woolf was a member, were artists, writers, economists, and art critics who met for intellectual discussion in the Bloomsbury area of London in the early 20th century.

Family Writing Contest Winners Announced

Congratulations to the winners of the Center for American Literary Studies' (CALS) Family Writing Contest! As part of the 2011 Centre County Reads program, featuring Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls, Centre County residents and Penn State students were invited to submit work on a family related theme.

Sean Goudie, the director of CALS, said "We were thrilled to receive a great number of entries to the CALS/CCR “Family” Writing Contest. The judges and I appreciate very much everyone's interest in the contest and the opportunity to read the entrants' work. Final decisions were extremely difficult to arrive at, the judges report, a testament to the overall quality of the entries."

The winners are:

Grand Prize Winner: Michelle K. Baker, Penn State Ph. D. candidate in the College of Communications, for “Wednesdays at the Q-Tip Diner”

Best Short Nonfiction: Lucy Green, Penn State MFA student, for "The Rule of Magic”

Best Short Fiction: Ben DeMeter, Penn State senior, for “Dig”

Honorable Mention: V. Jo Hsu, Penn State MFA student, for “Ghost Money”

Best Parody: Steven Deutsch, Centre County resident, for “Half-Broke Schwinns”

Best under-18 entry: a tie, between Margaret Rothrock, Centre County resident age 13, for “True Story”

and Katrina A. Verlinde, Centre County resident age 12, for “The Blizzard Family”

Centre County Reads 2011: Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

Announcing the 2011 Centre County Reads Book! Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle, wrote this "true-life" novel based on the life of her spunky and resourceful grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. Announcing the 2012 Centre County Reads selection: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This award-winning book has captured the hearts and imaginations of people around the world. We hope you'll read it and discuss it with your Centre County neighbors. Centre County Reads has many exciting events planned for this year including an Indoor Sports Day at the YMCA, a Grim Reaper Writing Contest, and a Skype appearance by author Markus Zusak! Read the winning entries! As part of the 2012 Centre County Reads community read of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, the Center for American Literary Studies at Penn State sponsored a Grim Reaper Writing Contest. Because The Book Thief is narrated by Death, the contest asked for submissions to be written from the point of view of Death. Thank you to everyone who entered!
