Bauer, Marian Dane. A Mama for Owen. Simon & Schuster, 2007. The young African hippopotamus who is adopted by a land tortoise clearly shows that caring is what defines "family."
Jeffers, Oliver. Lost and Found. Philomel Books, 2006. Once there was a little boy who found a penguin at his door. After helping him return to the South Pole, the little boy realizes he wasn't lost - he was simply lonely and looking for a friend.

Schlow Centre Region Library Community Afghan Project: Warm Up America

Ladies & Gentlemen, start your hooks & needles!

We are participating in a community afghan project to help Warm Up America and YOU can help.

To participate, please knit or crochet a quilt square (or many, if you like) that meets the following criteria:

7" x 9"
Washable yarn
Any Color

Our drop in Knitting group will assemble the afghans to be donated to a local community agency. Please feel free to download our instruction sheets for your referenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. (you will need Adobe Acrobat). Let's knit our community together!

Completed squares can be turned in to the Reference Desk on the 2nd flor of the library.

Centre County Reads 2011: Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

Announcing the 2011 Centre County Reads Book! Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle, wrote this "true-life" novel based on the life of her spunky and resourceful grandmother, Lily Casey Smith. We have many copies of Half Broke Horses available for you to check out at Schlow and exciting programming planned for this year, including a live mustang demo at the Snider Ag Arena, a theatrical performance at the Boogersburg School House, and a "family" writing contest sponsored by the Center for American Literary Studies at Penn State.
