Ask for Kids

Ask Kids is a search engine designed exclusively for young people ages 6 to 12. It's a free, safe, fun way for kids and their parents to quickly and easily research school topics like science, math, geography, language arts, and history in a search environment that's safer and more age-appropriate than traditional, adult search engines.

Studies prove that visual learning improves children's comprehension, retention, critical thinking, and organization. Additionally, children are better at "mousing" than typing. Ask Kids was built with this in mind, and organizes search results in a graphically vivid three-panel display that includes SmartAnswers and related images, current events, videos and encyclopedia results.

Each web site in the Ask Kids core search index was selected by the Ask.com editorial team as child-appropriate or as a relevant and practical site for referenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. and learning. Ask's proprietary search algorithm then identified communities and collections of web sites linked to the core list, and filtered those to remove adult content.

PBS KIDS is the place for shows like Clifford, Dragon Tales, Sesame Street, Barney and Teletubbies, and pbskids.org is the home for all of these characters! On most local stations, PBS KIDS shows are on TV in the morning — check TV Times to see when shows are on.

We have four different summer reading programs this year--one for every age group.

Register, record AND write reviews of what you read, right from your computer. If you do not have access to a computer at home, or are unsure how to proceed, the library has many computers, staff, and volunteers to assist--stop in and ask for a hand!

Each program has its own prizes to claim--click the "related content" links to the left to learn more about each.

The Internet for Kids

The Internet is an exciting entry to the universe of knowledge and people. It lets you chat with someone on the other side of the globe or view the globe from space. As the Internet is not regulated, people are free to put anything on it without identifying themselves, which leaves users open to some risks. Some material may be inappropriate and some information may be incorrect.

To ensure their children’s safety, parents must monitor whether their kids actually log on to the Internet in the Library and what they do once they are online as described in our Internet Policy (link below). Please read the Policy and review it with your child to make sure that you both are familiar with our rules.

Suggested Internet Guidelines for Kids

Always ask your parents' permission before using your full name, address, telephone number or school name anywhere online.
Always tell your parents or other trusted adults if you see something online that is scary or that you don't understand.
Don't respond to messages that make you feel uncomfortable or uneasy.
Never give out a credit card number or password online.
Never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone you know only through the Internet unless you discuss it with your parents and an adult goes with you.
Remember that not everything you see on the Internet is true.
