Go Club

Schlow's new Go Club meets every Sunday in the Sun Room from 1:45 - 4:45 PM. All skill levels are welcome. Instruction and assistance is available. Bring a Go set (if you have one). For ages 12 and up.

Chess Club

The Chess Club will start up again on Saturdays from 1-4 PM in the Sun Room. Some instruction and assistance will be available. Bring a board, set and clock (if you have any). There are chess sets available at Schlow anytime, especially the beautiful sculpted set by Mark Pilato (see photo). You must be 8 or older to participate.

Buzzeo, Toni. Little Loon and Papa, Dial Books for Young Readers, 2004. It's time for diving lessons, but Little Loon is too nervous. This tale of fatherly support is just right for anyone on the verge of learning a new skill.
Collard, Sneed B. III. Animal Dads, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1997. This book looks at the natural world with fathers cast in the caregiver role, showing a wide range of surprising parenting skills.
Dorros, Arthur. Papa and Me. Harper Collins Publishers, 2009. Lush illustrations show the close bond between a father and son.
Ernst, Lisa Campbell. This Is the Van That Dad Cleaned. Simon and Schuster, 2005. Dad's clean van doesn't survive an outing with his children.
Grambling, Lois. G. Daddy Will Be There, Harper Collins, 1998. Simple sentences assure the reader that, no matter what happens, Daddy will be there!
Hines, Anna Grossnickle Hines. Daddy Makes the Best Spaghetti. Sandpiper, 1989. Compare the way penguin dads and human dads feed and care for their children!
Lakin, Patricia. Dad and Me in the Morning. Albert Whitman and Company, 1994. A deaf boy and his father share a special time as they watch the sun rise at the beach.
Mallat, Kathy. Papa Pride. Walker & Company, 2005. This book presents an idealized vision of a father-child relationship as enacted by a wolf and his three offspring
Ormerod, Jan. Dad's Back. Lothrop, Lee & Shepard, 1985. Delightful toddler book simply shows dad and baby playing.
Ormerod, Jan & Carol Thompson. Molly and her Dad. Roaring Brook Press, 2009. Molly meets her dad for the first time and finds he's a lot like her.
Rockwell, Anne. Father's Day. Harper Collins Publishers, 2005. Every child in Mrs. Madoff's class writes a story about their dad and what makes him special.

This April, Centre County children will all be reading the same book, If You Were a Penguin, by Florence and Wendell Minor. Be on the lookout for special events fostering early literacy!

SCHLOW READING PROGRAMS ARE NOW ONLINE!

Register for the November Book Club beginning November 1 by clicking "Sign Me Up/Log In To The November Book Club" in the box to the left of the screen. Remember to set a reading goal to win a prize! The last day to log in books is November 30.

To be counted, books must be logged in on the website. Pick up a paper logging chart in the Children's Department or use a downloadable chart from the box to the left to keep track of books that you have read. Use the instructions on the chart to log in your books. Remember, only books logged in on-line will count.

Keep your spyglass at the ready! Watch out for even more swashbucklin' adventures at the library this November!
