Cast your ballot for your favorite artists & songs! November is a month full of elections. Democrat or Republican or Independent or something else, it doesn't matter here! What matters is that you VOTE!!! Watch this site for more information.

Anyone 12-18 years old may vote once per visit to the library for their favorite music artist or group. By voting, you gain a chance to win your favorite CD! Enter your vote form today!

The selected winner for the 9th Annual U Vote 4 Music picked Demi Lovato's album "Don't Forget."

Other artists that will be added to the collection include Britney Spears, John Mellancamp, Enya, Harry Connick Jr, Kenny Chesney, and many more! Check out the music shelves on your next visit!

First Thursdays - where did they come from?

Have you heard of our local First Thursdays? These monthly celebrations of the arts in downtown State College and on the Penn State campus follow a pattern adopted in a number of cities across America to devote one day a month to the arts. Our First Thursdays were started three years ago by the Friends of Schlow Library Board! Katie O'Toole, program chair of the Friends of Schlow Library, brought together representatives of downtown businesses and Penn State and communty arts groups to create First Thursday State College. The Friends not only spearhead the overall First Thursday, they also financially support and oversee the First Thursday events at Schlow Library. Schlow First Thursday programs in 2009 include a variety of musical events - handbells, klezmer music, opera music, show tunes, and more. Put First Thursday on your calandar each month and join the fun!

Hey Teens! Not old enough to vote in the big election! Come to the library and vote for your favorite music artists of the year and be entered to win an iTunes gift card! Pick up a ballot form at the library, and turn in to the ReferenceQuestions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time. Desk! Winner will be randomly drawn at the end of the month!

Schlow now offers free MP3 music file downloads on our website through Freegal Music, an online databaseA subscription to a (password protected) website full of information. that provides access to songs from the Sony Music Entertainment catalog.

To view, browse, and download music from Freegal, go to the box near the top of Schlow's homepage that says "Our Online Resources 24/7" and select "Download music" from the drop down menu. All Schlow Centre Region Library cardholders are eligible for three free MP3 downloads per week. A Schlow library card number and PIN are all that are necessary to access and download songs. The music files are compatible with PCs, Macs, iPods, iPads and other MP3-compatible devices and do not expire. No special software is needed to use the service and there are no digital rights management restrictions.

Global Connections' international music program returns to Schlow with a series of wonderful performances from talented musicians. Bring your lunch and enjoy the show! A suggested donation of $5 benefits Global Connections and Schlow Library.

All performances will begin at 12:10 in the Downsbrough Community Room.
