The long weekend
How do you get ready for a long holiday weekend? I get picnic food and plan family gatherings, but, of course, I gather a lot of books to read! Last Friday, I checked out 5 books from Schlow Library, but, in case that wasn't enough, I bought a copy of Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory. I wanted to read it if I was going to continue to recommend it. I really did enjoy it! My main criterion is that I care about the characters and I really did bond with with Del immediately. Maybe it was his confusion and panic that I could identify with. My other criterion is how do I feel when the book is over and, in this case, I continued to think about it and ponder the ramifications of the ending. This even caused me to wait a little before starting my next weekend book. Anyway, I highly recommend this new book. Let me know if you agree/disagree.
Of course, I had a lot of weekend reading to do, so I started my next book which was Caroline's Journal by Katherine Stone. This was a mild mystery/romance/chick lit story. It was a pretty enjoyable read and had a "feel good" ending. Sometimes the rest of your life dictates that you should just read something pleasant. I am in the middle of another book now called The Grave Tattoo by Val McDermid. This is one of my favorite kinds of books - it has an historical mystery - the search for a lost Wordsworth manuscript - and a modern mystery - a couple of murders and attempted murders, but I don't know how they are related yet. I started another Joan Hess mystery. If you are going to read more than one book at once, just be sure that they have nothing in common.
