Access PA POWER Library Reference Services Internet & Database Searching

Schlow Library's catalog is located on the World Wide Web and is accessible from any computer with an Internet connection. In addition to searching the catalogs of the public libraries in Centre County (Schlow, Centre County Library, Aaronsburg Library, Centre Hall Library, Holt Library and the Bookmobile), you can also search the catalogs of Penn State University Libraries and the Library of Congress. Not all items in the Library's collection are listed in the catalog - paperbacks and very recent books are not included. If you cannot find what you want, please ask for assistance from a staff member.

Access Catalog

Patrons can access the Access PA POWER Library database via the Internet from Schlow's catalog page. POWER Library gives you access to thousands of full text magazine articles, newspapers and a major encyclopedia. POWER Library also gives you access to an archive of 500,000 current and historical photographs. It is a great reference tool for all ages.

Any item not owned by Schlow Library may be requested on interlibrary loan. The item will be sent to the library for your use. Please realize that requests for items should be made several weeks before they are needed, as it can take 4-6 weeks to receive the requested item(s). There may also be a charge from the library sending the materials. You may call (814-235-7816) or email (interlib@schlowlibrary.org)  your interlibrary loan request. To process your request, we will need the following information:

     - Your name, library card number, home phone number, work phone number
     - The date the material(s) needed by
     - The amount of charges you will accept
     - Author of book
     - Title of book
     - Publication date
     - ISBN # of book
    

Information assistance, in person, via email or by telephone, is provided during library hours. Reference resources include telephone books, maps, business materials, the Internet and specialized databases.

NoveList

Patrons can access NoveList, a database of over 73,000 fiction titles. NoveList allows readers to use a favorite author or title as a basis to locate other titles and authors of interest.

Readers can also enter words that describe the contents of a book they would like to read and NoveList will retrieve titles that contain the words in the book’s subject heading fields.

Users can also browse over 1000 theme-oriented booklists, award-lists and fiction related lists.

NoveList contains material for all ages, including picture books, children’s “chapter” books, young adult titles and books for adult readers. Click here to access Novelist.

Individuals who are homebound may register to receive books by mail through our Homebound Books by Mail program. Large print books and books-on-tape are also available. The library is accessible to the handicapped. The ramped sidewalks, restrooms and elevator allow access to the library's services and collections. Anyone unable to reach the mezzanine level may ask for assistance at the reference desk.

Using public stations in the children’s and adult departments, you can access the Internet and search various databases. The library staff provides assistance and offers regular training sessions. Check at the Reference Desk for more information.
