Some of the terms used in "Library Land" can be confusing to those of us without specialized education or experience. Here are some definitions to help you out.

- eBooksearch for term
eBook, or electronic book, is a book that you "read" on your computer screen. Schlow highlights one book a month from our collection of eBooks available at NetLibrary which can be found by logging into your account. - Interlibrary Loansearch for term
When you request a material not in our collection, and we get it for you from another library.Synonyms: ILL
- Itemssearch for term
Books, audiovisual materials, periodicals.
- Online resourcesearch for term
A subscription to a (password protected) website full of information.Synonyms: Online database, database
- Patronsearch for term
A library cardholder and/or user of library services.Synonyms: borrower, user, customer
- Periodicalssearch for term
Newspapers and magazines.
- Referencesearch for term
Questions that you ask of library staff that require knowledge of the content of the collection or other resources such as those on the web. Sometimes you are referred to the answer, hence Reference. Reference can also refer to our reference materials that are often encyclopedic books that have many volumes and a concentrated number of facts and/or statistics. These materials usually have an overnight loan period so they are available in the library most of the time.

- Requestsearch for term
When the item you want is checked out to someone else you may request that it be held for you when it is returned. Requests can be made for any item in our catalog including new releases and items on order. You will receive notification via e-mail (or telephone) when your hold is available for pick up. Your request will be honored in the order it is received.Synonyms: Reserve, Hold
- Shelfreadingsearch for term
Checking to make sure that items are correctly shelved and correcting problems in shelving.
