Step Stool Designed for Children's Department

State College, Pa. Younger children have better access to the self-check out station in the Children's Department of Schlow Centre Region Library, thanks to a Julian furniture maker. Tom Barr, owner of Community Woodworks, has designed a step stool to replace the one used in the old library. The new stool is much wider and matches the color of the new wood furniture in the Children's Department.

"We found after we set up the self-check station in the Children's Department that small children who wanted to check out their own materials were not tall enough to reach the touch screen monitor," said Library Director Betsy Allen. "The step stool makes it possible for them to do it all on their own now, and it is wide enough to accommodate two children at once, so there are no fights over who gets to stand there first."

Barr has done work for the Library in the past, most notably refinishing the wood chairs in the old building.
