Hiya! Remember me? I'm your old friend the public library. In the Centre Region you can call me Schlow. I'm known all over the country by different names, though, and when things are going well, people tend to forget about me. That's ok. I'm still here when things get tough. Just like that childhood friend that you may only have contact with through holiday and birthday cards, I'm waiting to hear from you with open arms when things seem to be going terribly wrong (like today's economy)! Drop in to visit. I don't keep track of when the last time you visited was. I don't even hold [1] it against you when you've borrowed something and forgotten to return it (well, yeah, I'd still like you to pay the fines that accrued when things didn't get returned as we agreed, but I don't hold it against you!).
What? You're not much of a reader you say? Well that's ok. I don't just have books here, you know. I also have newspapers from the region and a couple national papers for your perusal. I keep a bunch of magazines around so you don't have to buy them (they're expensive, you know?) and I even keep all of the past year's issues handy for you to take a peek at if you're so inclined.
You're a modern person - you want to be a member of the electronic age? That's cool. I've got several public computers here for your use - free of charge! You can check your e-mail here - free! I've also got printers here for you if you need to print up a resume or an interesting article that helps you save money at home - unfortunately I do have to charge for you to print things, because I have to buy paper for your copies, but I'm happy to do it and I don't make any money on the copies you print! I also have wi-fi available here for your use if you have your own laptop and need some quick internet access.
Remember when you were younger and you'd come over and grab the latest book in that series you loved... Oh, what was it? Mrs. Piggle Wiggle? No, Harry Potter... Princess Diaries... Kinsey Milhoune... Ladies' Detective Agency? Oh I can't remember, but it doesn't matter. I have all of them here for you. If it's not here when you stop by, just let one of my friends at the circulation [2] desk know and they'll keep an eye out for it when it comes back. We'll even e-mail you when it comes in to invite you back for another visit and you can pick up the book then!
What!?!? You got laid off? Oh my gosh, I can't believe it. I'm so sorry. Well, maybe I can help. Did you know that I offer all sorts of information on my Power Library database [3] that can help you research new career tracks? You can also look at jobs online here with my public computers. Maybe you just need to bone up on that civil service or firefighter exam to get into a different job. I've got tutorials and practice tests on my website schlowlibrary.org [4] - just have your library card ready (remember when I gave you that card? It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, wasn't it?) log into your account (yes it's still there just for you) and check out the online resource "Learning Express Library" to access a ton of resources for your job hunting pleasure.
I hope something I've told you about will have you come back to me. I've missed you and I'm working hard to stay available to you as much as I can. If I need to do more, please let me know. I'm always ready to listen to a friend. Especially if my friends haven't been here for a while and won't tell me why - I need to know to make sure I'm giving you what you need in our relationship. Of course, it would be helpful to renew our friendship if you'd just stop by. I'm waiting for you! read more [5]
