Joseph Bruchac, the author of the Breakfast Serial - "Janko and the Giant", published each Saturday in the Centre Daily Times, has also written many other books for teens and children. One of the most intriguing teen books, is "Code Talk: a Novel about the Navaho Marines of World War II." As many people know, the Native Americans were told to forget the "old ways" and that included their languages, but during WWII, the military used them and their language to relay top secret messages. This is a novel about at true event. His latest book for young children is "Buffalo Song" about the first efforts to save the vanishing bison herds from extinction, also based on historical facts and illustrated wonderfully by Bill Farnsworth. Bruchac has also written books for older elementary students and these include "The Warriors," a story about a young Iroquois man who goes to boarding school and tries to explain the true history of lacrosse to his fellow players. If you like any of these books, look for many more titles by Joseph Bruchac at your local library or bookstore.
