Schlow Library is no exception. We have broadened our fundraising horizon this year, asking everyone to donate even a little bit to help make up for the budget shortfall we experienced due to last year's budget cuts. Unfortunately, this year's budget is being cut <em><strong>again</strong></em>! Some legislators are telling the public that they were &quot;able to flat fund library access at last year's fiscal level&quot; this does not mean that <strong><em>libraries</em></strong> are being flat funded, it refers to <em><strong>online programs</strong></em> that allow access to online databases and resources. Last year, those databases were cut to a level that barely kept them afloat and this year they'll remain at those levels. While we appreciate that those databases weren't eliminated altogether and are grateful for those efforts, we still have a <strong>budget deficit </strong>to make up for general operations through fundraising efforts. You can donate by returning the flier you may have received in the mail. About Budget Donation fundraising Thu, 29 Jul 2010 09:52:25 -0400 Melissa 5021 at http://www.schlowlibrary.org http://www.schlowlibrary.org/content/about/administration/no-more-cuts-libraries-speak-now <p> The deadline to pass a state budget is just days away.  The effects of the recession have created a hole in the state budget in the range of $1.2 billion.  If we are to avoid a repeat of last year’s 101-day late budget, Governor Rendell and legislators must pass a new state budget by June 30, one that fills this revenue gap either through increased taxes and fees, or more cuts to state programs—or both. </p> <p> Raising taxes and fees in an election year with the recession lingering is a tall order.  This reality increases the chances that the next budget might be balanced primarily through budget cuts, a possibility that could threaten library funding once again.  No specific library funding cuts have been mentioned but library supporters need to stay informed and engaged. </p> <p> <strong><u>Now</u></strong> is a key moment to speak up and urge all your friends to do likewise.  Tell Governor Rendell, your State Senator, and your State Representative this one simple message:  <strong>No More Cuts to Libraries.</strong>   Tell them that cutting libraries again is unacceptable, especially during this recession when libraries are busier and more needed than ever.  Remind them that in this year’s state budget, the <strong>four library line items <u>already</u> were cut this year by 3%, 21%, 51%, and 73% respectively.</strong> </p> <h2> Use the links in the details pane (to the left) and get started today! </h2> Administration Budget Funding Wed, 23 Jun 2010 10:05:15 -0400 Nathaniel 4752 at http://www.schlowlibrary.org
