Tonies @ Schlow

Looking for screen-free listening for your young reader? Borrow Tonies from Schlow Library!

A Toniebox is an audio player designed just for kids ages 3 and up. The controls are designed with little listeners (and little hands) in mind, so kids can easily start playing, adjust volume, fast forward, rewind, and change stories all on their own. The Toniebox is designed to help kids safely learn technology while building independence, focus, speech, and reading skills.

  • Add a Tonie figurine to the top of the Toniebox and it instantly starts to play! Some characters play stories, some play songs, and many play some of each.

  • Change tracks with a simple bump to either side of the Toniebox: right to fast-forward, left to rewind.

  • Adjust volume using the triangular ears on the front of the box: squeeze the small ear on the left to turn the volume down, and squeeze the bigger ear on the right to turn the volume up.
  • Plug your personal headphones into Toniebox's headphone jack, located on the top of the box, for solo listening.

FAQs

What are the borrowing rules for Tonies @ Schlow?

  • For the most part, Tonies and Tonieboxes circulate separately. Each Toniebox checks out in a backpack, with a charger and 2 Tonies (Favorite Children's Songs: Playtime Songs AND Very Hungry Caterpillar & Friends). If you are borrowing individual Tonies, we ask that you check out no more than 5 at a time.
    • If you are borrowing a Toniebox, the 2 Tonies that come with it do not count towards your total of 5 individual Tonies.
  • Both Tonies and Tonieboxes are checked out for 3 weeks with up to two renewals (if the items are not requested) for a total of 9 weeks.

Do I need to have WiFi to use a Schlow Toniebox?

Schlow Library has downloaded all of our circulating Tonies onto each of our circulating Tonieboxes. This means Schlow Tonies can be played without WiFi on Schlow Tonieboxes, so our Tonieboxes circulate in offline mode and a WiFi connection is not necessary to use them.

Can I play Schlow Tonies on my personal Toniebox?

If you’re using a personal Toniebox, you can listen to Schlow Tonies while you have them checked out, as long as your personal Toniebox is connected to WiFi to allow a one-time download of the Schlow Tonie. Once you have returned the Schlow Tonies, they will no longer play on your personal Toniebox.

How do I turn the Toniebox on and off?

Turning off your Toniebox is easy: you don’t need to do anything! Once a story has finished or there are no Tonies on the Toniebox and there is no further activity, the Toniebox turns off automatically after 10 minutes. There is no way to manually turn the Toniebox off, so no need to worry about turning it off when your child is done listening!

To turn the Toniebox back on, simply pinch one of the Toniebox ears. The Toniebox should then turn on and the LED light on the top of the box will glow to show you it's ready to play a Tonie.

When should I charge the Toniebox?

Tonieboxes can play for approximately 7 hours before needing to charge. The battery life will vary depending on factors such as the volume of playback (the louder the volume, the shorter the battery life).

The Toniebox will tell you when it needs to be charged, so wait until it gives you the signal that your battery is running low to place it on the charger. Charging only when the battery is almost drained will help the battery's lifespan.

Tonieboxes can play Tonies while charging. To reach full charge, the Toniebox should be left on the charging station for 3-4 hours. Even if the Toniebox LED (the light on the top of the box) is off, as long as the Toniebox is connected to the charging station, it is still being charged.

Tonies use magnets; what should I know about them?

Both the Toniebox and all Tonies use magnets to make story time come alive. All Tonies contain inaccessible, strong magnets, and the company does not recommend use of tonies® products around medical components such as defibrillators, shunts, or pacemakers. Magnetic sensitive products such as magnetic data carriers, credit cards and computers should also be avoided. Read more about their safety instructions.

What should I do if the Toniebox won't work?

Please bring any malfunctioning Tonieboxes back to Schlow so we can do our best to troubleshoot. We spent a lot of time getting them ready for you to borrow, and resetting them will delete all of their content and settings.
