This month's exhibition in the Betsy Rogers Allen Gallery features paintings by Kim Tae Hee.
"The Minhwa Series delves into the rich tradition of Minhwa, a genre of folk art created by common people in Korea during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910)." Kim says."Minhwa encompasses traditional Korean paintings that vividly depict the mythology, religion, and cultural mindset of the Korean people. These paintings were believed to hold the power to bring happiness, luck, wealth, health, fame, fertility, and to ward off evil spirits. With symbols of optimism, humor, wit, and love, Minhwa offers a profound reflection of the everyday life and spiritual beliefs of the time. This series reimagines these iconic folk motifs, blending traditional elements with contemporary interpretations, exploring how Minhwa continues to resonate and evolve in the modern world.
